A new boarding house along with extended and refurbished facilities for the Choir School adjacent to St Paul’s Cathedral. The building stands on the site of a part-demolished church by Sir Christopher Wren. St Paul’s Cathedral School is a Grade ll* listed 1960s building located just to the east of St Paul’s Cathedral in the heart of the City of London. As part of the school site, there is also an existing church tower, St Augustine’s Tower (designed by Wren/Hawksmoor), which is Grade l listed.
I was part of a small team of architects at KNA led by its Directors, Ben Kilburn and Richard Nightingale. The brief of the project was to have improved facilities, comprising a new boarding house, new staff accommodation, new classrooms, and a dining hall extension with new playground facilities beneath. I was involved in the tender, detail design, and pre-construction phase of the project. We worked together liaising with structural engineers and M&E consultants to overcome the many challenges that come with working in older and listed buildings.
